Dana Island


Dana (also called Ndana) is a small, uninhabited island located in the south of Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province. It's about thirty kilometers Southwest of Rai Jua. With an area of 14 km2, this island is the southernmost island of Indonesia. Along with some other nearby small islands, such as Ndao, it forms the regency of Roti Ndao.

Base on Savunese tradition, no one is allowed to visit Dana for any purpose, except for the annual ritual ceremony. Savunese believe that when they die, their spirit reside on Dana.

Local history says that nobody is living there because the entire population was killed during a revenge attack in the 17th century. The small lake on the island was red of all the blood from the victims. Today the island is inhabited only by deer, a large number of bird species and turtles who come to lay their eggs.

Dana Island is one of the Indonesia's outer islands vulnerable to controlled by neighboring countries. Allegedly, this island was several times visited by the Australian Navy. It's also said, that the island with natural beauty and is suitable for surfing, has long been coveted by the Australian

To maintain security in the southernmost island of Indonesia, since 2006, the Army and the Marine Unit of the Navy has made the guard station on the Dana island.

Bekantan (Proboscis Monkey)


Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus), also known as long-nosed monkey or proboscis monkey is an endemic animal from Kalimantan (Borneo). Bekantan is a monkey that has a special feature of the big long nose and reddish brown hair. Because of its nose, bekantan also known as 'kera Belanda' (Dutch monkey. This long and large nose only found in males. Females prefer males with big nose as their partner.

Bekantan consisting of two subspecies, namely Nasalis larvatus larvatus and Nasalis larvatus orientalist. Orientalis only found in the northeastern part of Borneo Island.

The males are larger than females. They also have a large belly, as a result of the habit of consuming food. Bekantan eats variety of leaves, which produce more gas when digested. This resulted in side effects that create a bulging stomach. A female has around 5-6 months of gestation period, and just gave birth to single pups in a single pregnancy. Bekantan childs will be with their mother until adulthood (age 4-5 years).

Kopi Luwak (Civet coffee)


Kopi Luwak (Civet coffee) is coffee made from the beans which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Civets. This coffee is produced in Indonesia Archipelago, particularly in Sumatra (well-known for its excellent coffee), Java, Bali and Sulawesi. It also produced in the Philippines, East Timor and Vietnam. Civet coffee is also known as the world's most expensive coffee.

The civets forage on only the ripest and sweetest berries as their food. Civet eats the raw red coffee as part of its usual diet. It does not digest the inner beans, instead excreting them still covered in some inner layers of the cherry. It is believed that enzymes in the stomach of the civet add to the coffee's flavour through fermentation of some type. Then they are gathered, thoroughly washed, sun dried and given a light roast.

Komodo Island


Komodo island is located at Komodo district, West Manggarai regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Since 1980, this area was used as an National Park by the Government of Indonesia, then recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1986. Komodo Island is known as a habitat for native animals 'Komodo dragon'. This island is also the Komodo National Park which is managed by the Central Government.

Komodo dragons live and breed well in the Komodo island. Until August 2009, there are about 1,300 Komodo dragons in this island. Coupled with the other islands, such as Rinca and Gili Motang, there are about 2500 Komodoes.

Sangiran Site


Sangiran is an archaeological site located in Central Java, 15 kilometers north of Surakarta, in Solo River valley, at the foot of Mount Lawu. The area comprises about 48 km². In 1977, Sangiran determined by the Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia as a cultural heritage, and in 1996 the site was listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Sangiran Early Man Site is one of the key sites for the study of human evolution. A second occurence of 'Java Man' was discovered here (first discovered in 1891 at Trinil by Dutchman Dubois).

Candi Mendut (Mendut Temple)


Mendut is one of the Buddhist temple in Indonesia. This temple is located in the village Mendut, Mungkid district, Magelang regency, Central Java, only 3 kilometers to the east from Borobudur temple. Mendut is older than Borobudur.

Mendut founded during the reign of King Indra from Syailendra dynasty. Based on Karangtengah inscription (824 AD), it mentioned that the king Indra has built a shrine called Wenuwana (bamboo forest). Inside Mendut, there are three big statue. Sakyamuni (who turns the wheel of Dharma), Avalokitesvara (the Bodhisatwa who helps mankind), and Maitreya (the future Buddha)

Gesang Martohartono, or known as Gesang, was born in the Surakarta (Solo), on October 1, 1917. Known as the 'maestro keroncong', he was a singer and the creator of the Javanese song. One of his most famous song is Bengawan Solo (Solo River), that took himself around Asia.
